How OHSAE began
A grandmother's lacquer box, five pigments, and a stubborn belief that beauty should be legible.
A box with five compartments
OHSAE started with an object, not a formula. A shallow lacquer box, divided into five compartments, each holding a different powdered pigment — white, black, blue-green, red and yellow. It had been used for mending ceremonial cloth, and it had been in the family long enough that nobody remembered buying it.
What struck us was the order. The five colors were not decorative. They were a system — the obangsaek — a way of naming direction, season and temperament with nothing but pigment. We wanted a beauty house built the same way: not on adjectives, but on a structure you could learn in a minute and use for years.
Beauty should be legible.
Five families, many people
Every OHSAE product belongs to one of five families. Baek is the white of clarity and barrier care. Heuk is black — depth, night repair, the pigment that anchors everything else. Cheong is blue-green, the color of calm and of skin that has stopped reacting. Jeok is red: warmth, circulation, the flush you were born with. Hwang is yellow, the center — radiance, balance, the shade that holds a face together.
You are never asked to pick one. Most people live across two or three, and the shape of that mix changes with the season. The families exist so that a routine can be read at a glance rather than decoded from a label.
Made in small lots
We produce in short runs and record every one. A lot number is not a marketing device here; it is the only honest way to say what is inside a jar made this month versus one made last spring. Ingredients drift. Harvests differ. We would rather show you the seam than pretend there isn't one.
The same honesty applies to claims. Where a product is vegan, it carries the badge. Where it is not — our Barrier Balm Concealer contains goat milk — we say so on the page rather than hiding behind a house-wide slogan.
What we are building next
The Studio tools — color scan, lip try-on, shade finder — run entirely in your browser, on your device. No photograph you take ever leaves it. The Atelier lets you build a case or choose an eco gift box, because an object you helped shape is an object you keep.
Fragrance is in development. Body is close behind. Both will arrive the same way everything here does: slowly, in small lots, with the lot number printed where you can find it.
